Oct. 10, 2015: We missed last year’s Michigan All State Orchid Societies meeting with Norito Hasegawa because I was feeling under the weather. We greatly regret not being there last year. This year, both Larry and I were nursing a cold but we couldn’t miss out again so we topped off on meds and took the trip to Lansing (the Greater Lansing Orchid Society is the hosting society venue).
This year, the speaker is Chris Purver, curator of the Eric Young Orchid Foundation in the Isle of Jersey, UK. His presentation was absolutely fascinating and inspiring. It was such a bummer that the plants he was supposed to bring into town with him did not make it out of the UK. New Vision Orchids to the rescue and had plants for sale, though.
The flowers of this plant is very fragrant. Larry really wanted this plant not only because it’s strikingly beautiful but because it’s Russ’s own awarded plant. We love getting opportunities to get pieces of awarded plants from the original growers themselves!
To round out the beautiful plants we brought home today, our fellow orchid society member Claire gave us this struggling Phrag to see if we can rehab it.
(picture from Internet) Such beautiful flowers! Getting this plant brings us back to the days when we would pick up every rescue orchid we can find (several of which we actually still have!) Hopefully, we get this plant to thrive! THANKS, CLAIRE!
