Jan. 21, 2016: I came to the United States in 2004 for work. In 2005, I got to fly home to the Philippines to attend my sister’s wedding. I have not had the opportunity to go back home since then. That is, until this year! The stars aligned and I finally had the perfect chance to go back home.
My hometown is called Jaro in Iloilo City in the province of Iloilo on the island of Panay in the region of Visayas (whew!). I went home during Dinagyang weekend which is one of the most popular cultural/religious festival in Iloilo (the province). It also happened to be a few weeks before Pista ng Nuestra Señora Dela Candelaria sa Jaro (Feast of Our Lady of the Candles) celebrated on Feb. 2 which is the biggest festival in my hometown. Celebration of this “pista” include plant vendors from all over the region selling their wares at the Jaro Plaza–which happens to be a few blocks away from my parents’ home so we checked it out!
Although I didn’t get to bring back any of the beautiful plants, here are some pictures of how orchid vendors look back home. All the plants were no id but seeing the vast array of those in bloom was still mind-boggling!
